| Coronary Artery Bypass Graft (CABG) |
| Who will consider undergoing the CABG? |
Coronary artery bypass grafting may be indicated when a coronary
angiogram shows >50% stenosis in the presence of any of the following:
-
Severe angina which is unresponsive to medical therapy
-
Marked ST depression of exercise ECG
-
left main stem stenosis
-
Severe triple vessel disease
-
Angina with left ventricle dysfunction
| What is the objective of the procedure? |
| The objective of the procedure is to relieve symptoms of coronary
artery disease, including angina, enable the patient to resume a normal
lifestyle and to lower the risk of a heart attack or other heart problems. |
| How long should I stay for Heart Bypass
Surgery? |
| You should stay at least a month to complete a whole process. On
your arrival day, you should stay in your hotel to relax from a long flight and
have a surgery on the following day. Normally, Heart Bypass Surgery requires
7-10 days in hospital. Post operative check up will be done afterward.
| How is the surgery performed? |
From the patients own arteries and veins located in the chest,
leg or arm. The graft goes around the blocked artery (or arteries) to create
new pathways for oxygen-rich blood to flow to the heart.
Heart Bypass Surgery (CABG) is done by using a heart-lung machine to pump
blood. As the alternative, off-pump coronary artery bypass (OPCAB) surgery
allows the surgery to be performed without stopping the heart and it is found
that blood transfusion is reduced. Surgeons will detach and attach the artery
to the area below the blocked area.
| What are the procedures following the
surgery? |
| Your heart rate and blood pressure will be continuously
monitored. Intravenous medicines injected through a vein are often given to
regulate blood circulation and blood pressure. Full recovery from traditional
CABG may take 6 to 12 weeks or more. You may return to work after 6 weeks. but
not for the job which requires physical strength.
| What are the common risks and complications? |
-
Stroke for elderly people.
-
Fatigue and sleep difficulty .
-
Constipation, muscle pain and swelling in the area where the vein was removed
-
Infection
-
Chest pain
-
Fever
| What are the alternative procedures? |
Minimally Invasive CABG:
Other alternative procedures of minimally invasive coronary artery bypass
surgery have been recently developed.
Off-pump coronary artery bypass surgery (OPCAB) is a procedure of performing
bypass surgery without the use of the heart-lung machine. Continuous
refinements to OPCAB have resulted in minimally invasive direct coronary artery
bypass surgery (MIDCAB) which is a technique of performing bypass surgery
through approximately small 5-10 cm incision.
What are the advantages ?
Advantages of minimally invasive surgery:
-
smaller incision and scars
-
shorter hospital stay - typically 3-4 days
-
shorter recovery time
-
reduced bleeding
-
reduced chances of infection
-
reduced pain and trauma
