The Kenya coast, with its miles of pristine white beaches and sparkling blue waters, comprises a number of islands, each with its own unique character and history. Mombasa is the largest and most popular island along this coast.
The island is a mystical mixture of ancient and modern, an intriguing potpourri of romanticism and practicality. The old part of the town is dominated by Fort Jesus, with narrow alleys overshadowed by high ornamental balconies and vibrant bazaars selling everything from spices to souvenirs. Entertainment is mainly centred on the hotels, although there are several discos and casinos for those who enjoy nightlife.
Many of the beautiful, white, sandy beaches are protected by reefs, providing a wonderful underwater world for scuba diving and snorkelling. Flat bottomed boats and other watersports are widely available, and golfing, horse riding and a visit to a crocodile farm are all opportunities not to be missed.
